I was rather excited to discover that hiding in the heart of our little city was a hookah bar. I had frequented them in other cities and had wonderful experiences. Finding one so close to home was fabulous. When I finally decided to investigate, however, I was not so impressed.
To start, the place has a great space to work with. The former Café Boba on S. Main Street, Akron Hookah House has high ceilings and a loft. Their décor is fabulous (it looks like they did a lot of their shopping at Ikea), they have pieces from local artists hanging on the walls, and the music was pleasant. My initial reaction was a positive one. From the minute I sat down, however, I was continuously let down.
My first issue was that the Hookah House had a one-drink minimum. I suppose this would have made sense if the bar served alcohol. But there was no bar, and certainly no alcohol. Nor was there any tea, which would have been my second choice. Canned pop was my only real option, which sat full the entire time I was there.
Beyond that, the shisha (flavored tobacco) they used was not all that great. Perhaps I've been spoiled in the past, but I assume if you are going to go out and pay for a hookah that is up-marked nearly ten times that it will be quality-especially considering the drink minimum. Their flavor selection was decent, but I would have paid more money to get decent shisha. They use instant coals, which was also a let-down, but was somewhat understandable.
Akron Hookah House serves home-made desserts, though no other food. This was disappointing, but by no means a deal-breaker. I didn't sample the desserts, however they did sound good.
The service itself was not all that great either. I found this particularly bad considering my guest and I were the only customers in the establishment for the majority of the time we were there. No one came over to check our coals until we asked-and we are quite patient people. It also took us a good 15-20 minutes to get our check, as the two people working disappeared behind the curtain for quite a while.
On a positive note, they do have live music there periodically, free Wi-Fi, and apparently show movies on a projector (though I have never attended a showing). I think for someone who has never smoked a hookah before, or are used to smoking cheap tobacco, the experience may not be quite as bad as mine. However, for someone who smokes hookah frequently and has "been around the hookah bar block," it would be quite a disappointment.

There are all kinds of shisha flavors to choose from and finding them is relatively easy. From Green Tea to even Bubblegum flavor, you can find practically any type of shisha you like when you search for them online. However, before you can start enjoying the sweet taste of shisha, you will first need to learn how to smoke them properly. Doing so, is the only way you can savor the sweet taste of each flavor and therefore, compare them astutely.
People who are connoisseurs of shisha and hookah smoking recognize the importance of methodology, especially with regards to different shisha flavors. How you handle the entire process can make a big difference in the taste and fullness of each flavor especially if you're trying to look for something that you like. So if you've never tried smoking shisha before, here are several tips to help you out.
Tip 1: First of all, you will need to put some water in a vase-like container. The ideal volume should be around 1 to 2 inches above the tip of the tube which goes down into the bottom of the container. You also have the option of adding ice inside the container if you want a cooler or thicker taste. This is particularly true if you are smoking certain flavors, such as menthol, because it allows you to savor the flavor in a more fulfilling way. Other flavors do not require ice, but if you want to experiment then go right ahead.
Tip 2: After you have added the water, attach a foil over the top of the bowl. Make sure that the foil is tight as this allows for even distribution of heat. Some people will use several layers of foil for added insulation, but you can use whatever seems best for you. After you have added the foil, puncture a few holes on the layer using a pin.
Tip 3: Next, make sure your hose is clean by blowing out any dust particles trapped inside. Dust particles of any kind can really ruin a good shisha experience by interfering with its taste.
Tip 4: Start lighting the coal. Some shisha flavors taste better when you use a lot of coals, while others taste best when you only use a limited amount of coal. Also, it's important to remember that there are different kinds of coals, and only a few of them can be used for hookah smoking. A couple of good examples include quick light coals and natural wood coals.
Tip 5: Only use the coals when they appear white or gray all throughout their entire surface. The reason behind this is because partially burning coal can disrupt the taste of shisha, and therefore, ought to be avoided. When the coals are ready place them on top of the foil and take several draws to get everything started. Keep moving the coal around as much as necessary to avoid burning or charring the shisha as well as the foil.
Use this tip for shisha flavors and you'll have a great smoking experience.
